Use Case: Attending a Live Session
Guide for joining and participating in live video sessions with your teacher on Speakly.PRO.
Prerequisites
- Stable internet connection (recommended: 5+ Mbps)
- Working camera and microphone
- Headphones or earbuds (recommended)
Step 1: Check Your Schedule
Open the Schedule
Click "Schedule" in the sidebar or navigate to /platform/schedule.
Locate the Session
Live sessions are marked with a video camera icon and a blue/purple color. Click on the session to see date, time, duration, teacher, and preparation notes.
Confirm the Time
Verify the session time against your local clock. If the time looks wrong, check your timezone settings.
Live sessions display in your configured timezone. If you recently traveled or changed time zones, update your profile settings before the session.
Step 2: Prepare Before the Session
Technical Preparation (15 minutes before)
- Browser -- use a supported browser (Chrome, Firefox, or Safari) with the latest version
- Camera and microphone -- test that they work
- Headphones -- plug in to avoid echo and feedback
- Close unnecessary tabs -- free up memory and reduce distractions
Learning Preparation
- Review assigned materials and complete any pre-work
- Prepare questions or topics you want to discuss
- Have notebook and pen ready
Step 3: Join the Session
The join button becomes active approximately 5-10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Joining from the Dashboard
- Your Dashboard displays an "Upcoming Live Session" card with a countdown timer
- When the countdown reaches zero, the "Join" button activates (turns from gray to blue/green)
- Click "Join" to enter the virtual classroom
Joining from the Schedule
- Open Schedule and click on the session event
- In the event details popup, click "Join Session"
- The video call opens in a new browser tab
Permission Prompts
When joining for the first time, your browser will ask for camera and microphone permissions -- click "Allow" for both.
If you accidentally denied permissions, go to your browser's site settings and enable camera and microphone for the Speakly.PRO domain.
Step 4: Navigate the Live Session Interface
Video Area
- Teacher's video occupies the main display area
- Your video appears as a smaller picture-in-picture
- Gallery view (in group sessions) shows all participants in a grid
Control Bar

Side Panels
- Chat panel -- text communication with the teacher and classmates
- Participant list -- see who is in the session
- Shared materials -- view documents or slides the teacher has shared
Step 5: After the Session
After a live session, your teacher may:
- Assign new homework based on what was covered
- Add new lessons to your Studies page
- Provide scores for the session (Speaking, Listening, etc.)
Check your Homework and Studies pages for new items.
Troubleshooting
Can't Join the Session
- Button still gray -- the session hasn't started yet. Wait until the join window (5-10 minutes before)
- Page not loading -- refresh the browser, or try a different browser
- "Session not found" error -- verify the session time and timezone. Contact your teacher if the issue persists
- VPN interference -- disable any VPN as it may block the video connection
Audio Problems
- Teacher can't hear you -- check that your microphone is unmuted and the correct input device is selected
- You can't hear the teacher -- check your speaker/headphone volume and the correct output device
- Echo or feedback -- use headphones instead of speakers
- Audio cutting out -- close other applications using bandwidth
Video Problems
- Camera not working -- check browser permissions for camera access
- Video freezing -- reduce video quality if available, or close bandwidth-heavy applications
- Black screen -- try turning the camera off and on again from the control bar
Connection Issues
- Disconnected during session -- refresh the page and click "Join" again. Your session should resume
- Poor quality -- move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or switch to a wired connection
- Persistent lag -- close all other browser tabs and applications
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What happens if I'm late to a session? A: You can still join an in-progress session. Click "Join" as usual. Your teacher will be notified of your arrival.
Q: Can I join from my phone? A: Yes. The live session works on mobile browsers and through the Speakly.PRO mobile app. For the best experience, use headphones with a built-in microphone.
Q: What if my teacher doesn't show up? A: Wait 10-15 minutes. If the teacher hasn't joined, check for notifications about cancellation or rescheduling. Contact your teacher via direct message.
Q: Can I share my screen during the session? A: Screen sharing for students may be enabled or disabled by the teacher. If the button is available in your control bar, you can share.
