Handwriting Check

Upload photos of handwritten text for teacher review with color-coded mistake annotations and drawing tools.

The Handwriting Check widget lets students submit photos of handwritten work (up to 10 images, depending on the task settings) for teacher review. Teachers annotate images with color-coded mistake marks, each carrying an inline explanation, and can draw freeform or straight lines directly on the images. A summary panel tallies mistakes by category. Line drawings are visual-only and are not counted as mistakes.

How It Works

The widget has two modes depending on your role:

  • Students upload photos of their handwriting and submit for review
  • Teachers enter check mode to annotate images with mistake marks and drawing tools

Inserting the Widget

Open the Insert Menu

Type /handwriting in the editor or select "Handwriting Check" from the Insert menu under Learning Widgets.

Configure (Optional)

The widget appears with default settings. Teachers can customize:

  • Maximum number of images (1--10)
  • Instruction text shown to the student
  • Which mistake categories are available during review

When the widget is created through Lesson Builder or an AI section preset, the same settings are available in the section form: instructions, maximum images, and the mistake categories teachers should check.

Student Workflow

Upload Images

Click the upload zone or drag and drop photos of your handwritten text. Supported formats: JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP, HEIC, HEIF.

Preview and Remove

Review your uploaded images. Click the X button on any image to remove it.

Submit for Review

Click "Submit for review" when ready. A confirmation prompt will appear warning that submission is irreversible by the student — only the teacher can return it for editing. Click "Yes, submit" to confirm or "Cancel" to go back.

Once submitted, your images are locked for teacher annotation.

View Results

Once the teacher has checked your work, you will see color-coded marks and drawn lines on your images with explanations, plus a summary of mistakes by category.

Place Marks

Select a mistake type from the palette, then click on the image where the mistake occurs. A mark appears at the click position. You can place multiple marks of the same type quickly, or switch types from the palette.

Draw Lines

Select "Freeform" or "Straight line" from the drawing tools section, then click and drag on the image to draw. Lines are visual annotations — they help highlight areas of interest but are not counted in the mistake summary. Click the undo button to remove the last drawn line.

Add Explanations

Click any placed mark to open a popover where you can type an explanation of the mistake. Press Enter or click outside to save.

Review Summary

The summary panel at the bottom shows the count of mistakes by type and the total. Drawing lines are not included in this count.

Mark as Checked

Click "Mark as checked" to finalize the review. The student will see all marks, drawn lines, and explanations.

Return to Student

If the student needs to revise their submission, click "Return to student" to revoke the submission. This resets the widget to the upload state so the student can edit, add, or remove images and re-submit. This button is available both before and after marking as checked.

Drawing Tools

Drawing tools let teachers annotate images with visual lines that are not counted as mistakes. They are useful for underlining, circling, or pointing out areas of interest without inflating the mistake count.
