Annotations & Comments
Add comments, suggestions, and track changes in lesson content.
Comments
Comments let you attach discussion threads to specific pieces of text.
Adding a Comment
Highlight the text you want to comment on, click the Comment button in the floating toolbar (or the toolbar Comment button), type your comment, and click Save. The commented text is highlighted, and the comment appears in the sidebar panel.
Comment Threads
Comments support threaded replies:
- Other teachers can reply to your comment
- Threads keep discussions organized by topic
- Each comment shows the author name, avatar, and timestamp
Resolving Comments
When a comment has been addressed:
- Click the Resolve button on the comment
- The comment is marked as resolved and the text highlight is removed
- Resolved comments can be viewed in a "Resolved" filter
Suggestions (Track Changes)
The suggestion mode works like "Track Changes" in word processors. Instead of directly editing the text, your changes are recorded as suggestions that can be accepted or rejected.
Entering Suggestion Mode
- Click the Suggestion Mode toggle in the toolbar
- The editor border changes color to indicate you are in suggestion mode
- Any changes you make are recorded as suggestions, not applied directly
Making Suggestions
While in suggestion mode:
- Adding text -- new text appears with a colored underline and is marked as an insertion
- Deleting text -- removed text appears with a strikethrough and is marked as a deletion
- Formatting changes -- changes to bold, italic, etc. are tracked
Accepting and Rejecting Suggestions
Each suggestion can be handled individually:
- Accept -- apply the change to the document
- Reject -- discard the suggested change and keep the original text
- Accept all / Reject all -- batch-process all pending suggestions
Suggestion mode is especially useful when a co-teacher reviews your lesson. Instead of making changes directly, they can suggest edits that you review and approve at your own pace.
Teacher Annotations
Annotations are special blocks that are visible only to teachers and hidden from students. They are used for:
- Teaching notes (how to present a section, timing guidance)
- Answer keys and explanations
- Reminders and preparation notes
- Contextual instructions for substitute teachers
Adding an Annotation
- Type
/annotationor select "Annotation" from the Insert menu - An annotation block appears with a distinctive visual style (usually a colored border)
- Write your notes inside the block
How Annotations Appear
- Teachers see annotations in the editor with a clear visual indicator
- Students never see annotations -- they are completely hidden in student view
Example annotation content:
Go through each rule. Ask the student to explain in their own words.
Don't correct grammar here -- focus on building confidence.
Expected time: 5 minutes. The AI lesson builder automatically generates annotations for each section with teaching tips, timing guidance, and suggested approaches. You can edit or remove these as needed.
Filtering and Viewing
The comments sidebar provides filters to manage your review workflow:
- All comments -- see everything
- Open -- only unresolved comments
- Resolved -- only resolved comments
- My comments -- only comments you authored
- Suggestions -- only tracked changes
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I export comments?
Comments are tied to the editor and cannot be exported separately at this time. However, you can copy annotation content into separate documents if needed.
What happens to comments when I regenerate a section with AI?
If the text that a comment is attached to is replaced during regeneration, the comment may be orphaned. Review comments after significant content changes.
Can I add comments to exercises and widgets?
Comments are attached to text selections. For feedback on widgets, add a comment to the text immediately before or after the widget, or use an annotation block with your notes.
